Board and Batten Up to the Sky

January 13, 2012

Julia (who writes one of my favorite blogs, Hooked on Houses) featured the home of designer Roger Hazard earlier this week, and I love how he used extra tall board and batten, painting the top of the walls and ceiling a dark contrasting color:

It adds instant architecture, and the dark ceiling gives the room such a cozy feel.  He used the same technique in other rooms, although I don’t love it quite as much with the lighter color paint on top.

I love any kind of wainscotting… short, tall, whatever… it’s all awesome! So funny that you posted about this because my friend and I were discussing this for her bedroom just yesterday!

Love it! Our board and batten goes up six feet, which just makes the room look so much more classy than shorter b&b would have, IMO.

Love it, and I agree, it definitely looks better with the dark color. I love the contrast of the white and navy.

Love the dark top, but I am with you on the lighter. It just doesn’t seem to do much for the room! I had to do a double take to see where the light paint was!

I love it! Ever since I saw Sarah Richardson do a paneling treatment in the dining room of her country home about 2/3 of the way up, I’ve wanted to try it out in my kitchen, with grey on top.

It’s on my ever growing to-do list. Hope my husband’s on board ; )

    Have a great weekend.

I love this – I have taken the color and run it totally across the ceiling -oh, what a statement. I too am ‘hooked’ on Hooked on Houses. (but I missed this great post – will go back and revisit!)
Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend!

Oh gosh I think this might finally be THE solution for our dining room. We have a long, plain empty wall that just needs SOMEthing but I hadn’t completely settled on WHAT. (grass cloth, paneling, gallery wall–the current look that I don’t LOVE there–stripes). I thi k this is IT. Thank you for sharing!!!

Oh yeah – I love this! I agree it looks better with a dark color on top. It’s weird how the dark color actually makes the ceiling look taller.

beautiful! We’re just adding Board and batten to our daughters rooms, and now I’m thinking we should have gone taller lol. We went 6.5 feet, but we have 11 ft ceilings. We did use a dark colour on top which looks great, though =)

What a cool trick! I agree that the lighter color doesn’t feel as cozy, but it does make the ceilings look sky high!

I LOVE this look. I’m a little concerned about whether the dark paint at the top of the wall (not necessarily the ceiling) would make our ceilings appear lower (they’re 9 foot). What do you think?

I love it at any height! The dark looks amazing… I might be reconsidering the height of ours when we do our B&B treatment.

A friend of mine did that in a small room with chocolate brown as the wall color and it was really amazing. She also had the molding at the top be more of a shelf so she could display things. Apparently she got the idea from Martha Stewart!
