Love this idea that I recently spotted on Houzz. I see so many new construction homes with a similar set up–fireplace (meant to house a TV above) with built-in bookcases on each side.
Houzz
I often suggest painting the back of the bookcases for color, but painting just the mantel and fireplace surround is a great way to use a bold color without going overboard. (A dark color is also another way to make the TV less noticeable.)
Love this look. The dark color against the white bookcases is perfect!! Great idea.
I’m sold. Mostly because it hides the tv!
this is too funny! i had nto seen this image before but i just painted my brick and mantle gray this weekend! would love for you to come check it out!

I love this! What about some ideas for sprucing up a stacked stone fireplace?
What an awesome idea. This is one worth saving, for sure.

Smartie smartie smart girl! What a clever idea to pass along to us. :)
Wow, now this feels fresh and different!
Love this!
Very pretty; I like this look! Especially the way it keeps the tv from jumping out at you like it does against white.

Brilliant idea! Love how this both draws your attention and disguises the tv.
I love this idea. I hate how our tv sits in our family room, but this could be an option with the dark background.
Hi Emily,
Thanks so much for this great idea! I’ll be painting my built-in bookshelves white and a dark background would be perfect for hiding the tv! Love it!
This post makes me want to paint my all white fireplace!
This is such a great design option! Thanks for sharing.
I’m loving charcoal grey these days. I love how it makes the fireplace pop and disguises the t.v. in the photo.
Have a great weekend!
