A Distressed Dresser Project

April 7, 2011

For those of you who have read my blog for a while, you know there was a time when nothing in my house was safe from the possibility of being coated with glossy white spray paint.  As of late, though, I’ve been considering bringing in some more textured, weathered pieces to mix things up.  I like the dresser in our family room, but have wondered if it would be better if I beat it up:

Carol of The Design Pages recently sent me pictures of a dresser she distressed:

I was surprised that this piece looked so good distressed, even with the detailing on the drawers:

Carol’s looks like a $3600 piece from Wisteria. She did an amazing job on it!

Off to see how she did it!

I think I’m going to jump onto the distressed bandwagon too. It makes things look so interesting, and well loved. And, bonus, if my little one and fur baby happen to give the piece a little extra “love” I won’t be heart broken ;)

Can’t wait to see what you do!

Carol’s piece is so impressive. I haven’t built up the courage to distress something myself yet. Ironically I’m afraid of messing it up!

Love this distressed look…sometimes it looks too “distressed” and in my opinion tacky. The good thing about going this route when you have kids is if they nick it….you’re all good. : )

Love the distressed dresser!! What a great job. Emily, I can’t wait to see an after pic of yours if you decided to do it, too! Here is my first attempt at distressing:

I figured my cute boys were going to “distress” it in their own way over the years, and I didn’t want to freak out if that happended. I beat them to it!

Also, I LOVE the way you placed your television. I have almost the same set up, but the TV off the side, with a vase on the cable box, looks great! I have two lamps flanking the TV that’s in the middle, and I don’t love it. Thanks for the great idea!

I love the look of clean paint! But I can agree, sometimes the distressed look adds something. I recently did a console for my TV – and for something fun, I added a pop of orange inside:

Also – your TV gallery wall is currently an inspiration for my wall.
Can’t wait to see what you do!

Hi! I found your blog because of that first picture :-) It became my inspiration for a gallery wall around our TV! Thanks for the inspiration!

I love your dresser white, and Carol’s dresser looks great too. But I have to say- I love the dresser in it’s original wood. I would’ve stained it another shade perhaps, but the wood color has my heart!

Lovely! I’ve been researching different finishes for an old secretary I have that’s on the “beat up” side. :) I say go for it, Emily! If you don’t like it, you can always break out the glossy white again!!

Love the dresser – an awesome transformation. It’s perfect timing too as I want to do something to a great old chair I bought for my daughter’s desk…but hadn’t gotten to it yet. Heading over to her blog to get more details – thanks!
