I’ve been working with a client on making their “playroom” a space the whole family can enjoy. Although we’re not quite finished, I snapped a few pictures while I was there over the weekend and thought you might like to see where we are with the makeover. . .
This is part of the original plan:
warm walls, a comfy sofa, a large upholstered ottoman and some fun fabrics.
Trust me when I say I felt right at home the first time I walked into the space. I have a very similar room in my house that’s never made its way to the blog :)
After paint, a new window treatment, new upholstery, and some extra storage:
Since a playroom will inevitably have plenty of items you don’t want to see all of the time, we used a curtain to divide the space and “hide” some of the girls’ toys. I originally showed the client this page from an older Better Homes & Gardens for inspiration:
One of our main projects over the weekend was recovering this solid ottoman from Target with a bright, lattice fabric. The online selection of patterned ottomans is pretty slim, and this was a much less expensive option than ordering a custom piece.

We also worked on laying out a gallery wall arrangement for some of their family photographs that will go above this piece (a consignment shop find; don’t you love all of the pulls?):
A few more tweaks and I’ll hopefully get to share the finished room with you soon. . .
Love, love, love the combination of fabrics in this room!
love your fabrics….and i had to laugh when i saw your shelves…i just painted the ones in my playroom from dark wood to white and turquoise a couple of months ago!

It looks great! I love all the fabric choices! Did ya’ll actually recover the ottoman yourselves?
Emily! This room made me gasp with delight! Gorgeous reinvention of that space. The color and fabric choices are brilliant. The back of the bookcases is the perfect pop. I truly love seeing what you do. Could you share whose fabrics those are?
Love the ottoman and all the fabrics! Great divison of space and I love the bookcases…can you share where from? The blue in the back are fantastic – love your work.
It looks really good Emily.
I cant wait to see the finished product.
I know the family will certainly enjoy every minute of being in there once it is complete.

That looks so cozy!!! Love it! The built ins look smashing with the paint behind the shelves! Love that look.
Love it…the fabrics are just gorgeous, so fresh and crisp. Love the vibe! Can’t wait to see more!
It’s going to be great! I love all the fabrics, young and fresh!
The fabrics are amazing! Love it all:)
I love what you have done so far, especially the color scheme. Blue and green are my favorite colors!
I have been reading your blog for a couple of months now, and I love all of your work, but this might be my favorite room so far. The colors are playful, yet the fabrics are gorgeous. The room is turning out great.
It’s a great room in so many levels. It’s a bit challenging with that kind of ceiling and you did a great job. The choice of fabrics are fun but not too “childish”, so the kids and space can grow with it.
Great choices, Emily.
One question. Can you please, tell me what program you use to put the images together? (1st picture). I’d be very grateful if you let me know.
Thank you.
Have a blessed week!

I love, love, LOVE the fabrics you chose in this room! I have been looking for blue/green fabrics as accents in my family room, and it’s always great to see how others are using them and the most effective way to get some real *pop* with them. Thanks for sharing – can’t wait to see the final project!
Love the fabrics in this room! Love that shade of green!
Beautiful Emily. I love the fabric choices.
Love the curtain and ottoman fabrics. Can’t wait to see the finished room!

Emily…I love the combination of fabrics! Those are so my colors…..you are so good girl.
The room is coming together beautifully! I love the thoughtful choices with fabrics- the bird fabric is playful and goes well in a playroom, while also being chic for the adults! And I love the idea of covering the target ottoman with a great fabric!!
Love the color pop on the back wall of the shelving….great color palette! I’m so excited to see the finished room! Thanks for sharing! xoxo Shelli

I love the collection of Waverly fabrics you selected!! I have been debating about the One Wish Mint Julep fabric for my own space and finally broke down and ordered it last night. I was excited to see this post today and how beautiful the fabric looks!! All my doubts are gone and now I am eagerly awaiting it’s arrival in the mail. I blogged about my fabric choice today and posted a link to your blog! Love your blog and your designs. xoxo

Looks great Emily! Bright and cheerful!
That looks so great! The ottoman and the roman shade are my favorite!
Emily, this looks fantastic. We recently moved the girls’ playroom upstairs and it is now a complete disaster zone. I would love to give it a complete overhaul! Thanks for the inspiration!!
It’s looking great…love the colors. Can’t wait to see more!!
Looks great! You are so good at what you do.
Gorgeous! I can’t wait to see the finished product. By the way, someone had a question for you on my blog in the comments. Lmk if you want me to answer it for them!
Wow! What an awesome room! Looking forward to seeing finished pictures!
Emily I am loving all the fabric choices and the bookcases with the blue back is exactly what I am seriously thinking of doing in the playroom I am doing in my own home. This gives me more of a push in that direction!! Great job, Kathysue
I totally want to have a play room like that – for myself!! The ottoman is awesome.
I LOVE the colors you chose and the curtain idea is great for hiding all the baby/kid “stuff”!!

I also love the fabric choices! The strong green and blue combination can sometimes look really young, but you’ve managed to make a room that still feels adult. Where are the fabrics from?
It’s going to be great! and I love the idea of drapes over the closet doors. Our extra bedroom that I hope to convert to office has sliding closet doors that essentially keep you from accessing the closet! Removing the doors and covering with drapes is a great idea!
Thanks E!
Love this! Can you tell me more about the fabrics? I am interested in them for my playroom!
Did you post the finished room? I love the ideas you’ve incorporated – would love to see how it turned out!
