Today, just a few random updates of what’s going on around here. . .
The chalkboard paint under the counter is all finished with the exception of a few touch-ups. I’ll share more about this process later in the week.
And, in a last minute decision, I went with Benjamin Moore’s “Silver Chain” in our bedroom. I read every one of your helpful suggestions on Friday, and the comment that kept sticking in my head was the reader who said it looked blue. I eventually agreed and went with a grayer gray. I’m very happy with the result.
I’ve also been moving furniture around and have decided to part with a pair of these tufted chairs. I bought them with the intention of reupholstering them, but it’s just not on my priority list right now. I plan to list them on Craiglist this week, but if you’re local and interested, email and let me know.
What did you work on this weekend?
Craig is your man if you want them sold! Good luck I know they will go quickly!

Ha! That spam is funny! I wish my husband would;-)
Anyway, great color choice Emily! The Kiddo’s look so cute drawing on the chalboard!
And don’t you dare get rid of those chairs! JUst keep them. Wouldn’t they work somewhere else in the house? I know they would. Mine haven’t been upholstered either, but I doubt I’d part with them!
The color is amazing! I love the true grey colors:) If I was closer to you those chairs would be MINE!
I need some chalkboard paint… and how cute is that photo???
Happy Monday Emily ~
xoxo Laura
we had hideous wallpaper iin our old house’s kitchen and the owners had even papered the back of the island- it was atrocious!!!! i stripped it and painted it with chalkboard paint, and then we moved before my kids ever got to enjoy it. i am so glad your kids are loving it- what a great place for them to play while you cook…. or in my house while my husband cooks and i sip wine! ;)

Great choice on the gray-those chairs are SO tempting! Im only an hour 1/2 away…might be emailing you!
how did you make chalkboard paint look so classy? I love this idea under the counter.
I am loving your style, Emily! It is nice to meet you.
I am following along.
Looking forward to more of your ideas.

You were very productive! Love the chalkboard , glad you took the risk. It rally paid off, looks amazing and the kids look happy.
For how much do you plan on selling the chairs? They’re gorgeous!
So glad you went with the chalkboard paint and the gray is really pretty. We got out in the amazing weather and worked on outdoor DIY house projects. Well my husband worked and I took picts while drinking tea and holding the rope to the ladder so he didnt fall. Thats work right???
Looks like the chalkboard paint is a hit! The paint color looks great!
I started lots of little projects which is sort of a bummer . . I left a trail of unfinished “stuff” around the house! Oh, those chairs. Wish I were closer. Excited to see your room come together.
i bought a high back upholstered chair at goodwill the other week and we started taking it apart to recover it. there are a MILLION staples!!!! have you ever recovered a chair before and do you have any diy tips??? i have a picture if you would like to see it.
i’m still deciding what to cover it in….maybe a neutral duck cloth with high gloss black legs and black trim. i still feel like we need more color in our living rom though :(
love the way the bedroom turned out!
Love that you went for the chalkboard wall under the counter! Those chairs are fabulous…are you sure?! They are just striking. (If I lived anywhere near you I’d be jumping in my car this very second.)

I so love the chalkboard idea. we are thinking of moving to a high rise that would have a similar island type set up. I think this would be such a fun idea.
I love the color choice. Looks great!
It looks like the kids had a great time with the chalk board. Great idea. Love the gray that you chose. I cant wait to see how it turns out. My weekend was busy, too! I did a post all about it today!
I think the chalkboard idea is great and the gray on the walls look lovely! I totally understand what you mean by reupholstering the chairs not being a priority. We had a couple of pieces that my inlaws gave us when we got married that sat for about 8 years as is but I was so happy when I finally could reupholster them and in the mean time I made the pieces work together. I see the potential in those chairs and I say keep them. Couldn’t you add a little splash of yellow in your decor to make the chairs fit in? Two chairs are hard to come by these days without a price.
Regarding projects….this weekend I invested in one of those sterilite 69″ tall cabinets for my laundry room. I was able to hide all the uglies (detergent bottles and cleaning products). It was well worth the $75! I don’t make it to Walmart often but this time I went inspired by all the blogs I have been reading and came home with two lamps, fabric for a bathroom sink curtain..what fun. My project next weekend is to design and beautify my front porch. Do you feel like blogging about that? :)
I’ve always been tempted to do the chalkboard paint thing, but have had reservations because of the potential dust and mess that it might generate once the cherubs take to it with chalk.
So? Is it dusty and messy? I’d really like to know…
You don’t just have to go with black chalkboard paint. Use any color you’d like.
Its an easy 4 step process:
1) Put a cup of paint into a small cup or bucket. Take the 2 tablespoons of tile grout (without sand) and pour into the paint. Mix it up with a paint stirrer. Break up any clumps you see.
2) Use a roller or sponge paintbrush to apply to a primed or painted surface. Work in small sections. You may need to apply the paint several times to get good coverage. Let it dry.
3) Take 150 grit sandpaper and smooth it down and wipe the dust off.
4) Take a piece of chalk and use the side of it to rub a layer all over the entire painted surface. Then use a slightly damp sponge to wipe off the chalk dust. This conditions the surface.
Voila! A chalkboard in any color you want!
love the chalkboard in the kitchen, how fun. also love that chair! so pretty. happy monday! xoxo jcd :: cornflake dreams
It looks fantastic. I assume the chairs don’t work with your colour scheme but it sure looks great from the shot you took.
love the projects.
You were a busy mama! I love the chalkboard paint on the island. Very cool. :)
I have an upholstery question for you. I saw a pair of fabulous chairs with ugly old upholstery, but amazing lines at my local Salvation Army. I wanted so badly to bring them home, but the fear of bedbugs made me pass them by. Do you do anything special to items like that when you purchase them? Is there anything I should look out for? I think I’ve seen one too many Dateline episode…. :s
Lovely! I love the chalkboard wall. The chairs are great! I want them (:

I like the chalkboard area in the kitchen so the kids can have something to do while mommie’s cooking.
Thanks for sharing!

Loving the color you went with- looks perfect.
HOWEVER, please leave that chair right there! I thinks it looks amazing next to that peacock blue panel! Fresh, unexpected, chic… I love the gold. I bought a similar chair at an estate sale and thought she would get reupholstered, but when I got her home, I plopped her right in my foyer and bam- love! I don’t have a speck of gold in my whole house other than that chair and it works. I believe the same can be said for yours… and you have a pair?!!! STOP!!! :)
– Sorry, left comment w/ the wrong account. ;)
Love the chalkboard. Hope you get a chance to past a wider angle of the room. Also, wish I lived closer – that chair is awesome!!
LOVE the gray you chose! I know you won’t have any problem getting rid of the chairs…but do you really want to? You can always redo them later. :-)

I love gray! Sadly I didn’t work on one thing this weekend.
Your kids are going to be hair models. My daughter has about 7 hairs on her head!!
Love the chalkboard!!!!! I bet they do too!
The grey turned out beautifully! I applaud you getting rid of the chairs if you can’t get to them soon– sometimes it’s so hard for me to let go of things I “plan to” work on, even if it’s a ways down the road.
I love the grey color on your walls, good choice.
The blackboard looks like a hit!
Ugh, I want the chairs but Arizona is a little far :(
Looks like the kiddie love the chalk board on the cabinet. I love those chairs. I am sure they will go quickly!

Love the color! Wish I were close because I would take those chairs for my “bedroom makeover”. Weekend… well, I worked on my new bedding and pillows. Trying a new look – cream/tan/brown/blue theme in our room. Walls… what to paint them when you have oak stained woodwork. Not the same look as the clean white woodwork. Any suggestions??? Would love some help!
I’m Renee and a new follower of your blog! Just thought I’d say hello, rather than be one of those creepy people that lurks around on your page haha
anyhoot, i love what you’ve got going here, very cute!
Feel free to take a look at mine [you know, just so you know who’s reading yours :)]
