I’ve commissioned two artists to do original paintings for our upstairs bathroom . . .
Fortunately, they work for Cheez-Its, and don’t complain when I pick their color palette.
Best of all, one is a portrait artist, while the other specializes in more abstract art. So, it all works out.
They couldn’t be prouder of their creations–even if they are hanging over the toilet. . .
The total cost of this project was under $20. I picked up the canvases at Big Lots (2 for $6) and the paint was $0.99/bottle at Wal-Mart in the craft section. And, did I mention it kept them busy for at least half an hour? To quote the Mastercard commercials–“priceless.”
How do you display your kids’ artwork? I would love to see how you use it around your house.

Very cute, Emily!!
I thought I was the only one who hung my kids art over the toilet! :) Loving that shower curtain in the bathroom- when do we get a peek at the whole shebang? Check out this awesome blog by Kathy Barbro for even more cool art project ideas for kids – this woman has made Chicago winters bearable for me: http://www.artprojectsforkids.org/2011/02/musical-instrument-contest-to-check-out.html.
Seriously, they are so stinking cute (both the art and the babies)

THis is sooo cute Emily!!! I must try this out myself. you and Janell are good when it comes to putting the kids to work;-)
Oh and don’t think I didn’t see that west elm shower curtain!!! I’m so gonna order mine now!!!
LOVE the art my kids do, it’s all through the house! Great paintings yours did, fun! Janell
Totally the best sort of artwork!! Your daughter looks like a mini you! I love to frame my daughters artwork and swap it out periodically, she’s 12 years old and totally gets a kick when I put a new piece of “art” out from when she was a little girl! I also have a few of her handprints displayed in my office and at least once a month she comes in and puts her hand next to them to show me how much she grows!!
wonderful and creative idea!! they did such a good job :)
Well, there’s no question where they get their talent! Seriously cute. My 12 year old is a budding artist – she specializes in dragon drawings!
I imagine that is the art in your home worth the most :)
They did a beautiful job and the colors are amazing.
I stole this same idea from Primitive and Proper a month back. Mine is hanging in our hallway…..
Great post! Nothing like making a house a home with the special touches. :-)
That is so adorable!!! They look great hanging…
What a great idea! I love what they came up with. There’s nothing better than original art done by your kids!
These are great! I can’t wait to have kids so I can hang up their art all over the house :)
SO cute…I had no idea canvases were so cheap at Big Lots. I’ll have to go check those out….I’ve got 4 of those same type of artists running around this house. ;)

There is a future with those 2 budding artist!!! I love them!!!
Absolutely adorable- love their masterpieces!
That is hilarious! I love the art … and the little ones!!
Well you can be guaranteed that they will be noticed. Bathrooms are high traffic areas in our house and I’m betting yours is too. I love the idea. I have a huge wall in our basement playroom with the kids artwork. They love showcasing their creations!

love kids’ artwork (i don’t even have kids yet), but i love the bright colors & freedom with which they paint. i have a few pieces in my own home. :D
My mom used to always hang up our art projects in the bathroom. I think some might still be hanging there. Yours are really precious!
I love this. Mine work for goldfish! Your daughter looks so much like you! We have art in our upstairs hallway and I love seeing it.
That is the best kind of art! My favorite pieces in my home are all by my son!
Those look absolutely Fabulous – wonderful color, composition, and creative expression… And they really look so charming in the bathroom! You tell them I said so!

I’m so happy to know a cheap source for canvases!! Genius! I don’t care if they are only busy for 10 minutes, any time they are busy is priceless…and they turned out so darling. <3 love it.
So cute! Is there anything better than our kids’ art? I dread the day when it stops.
So precious, Emily! My kids are past enjoying the arts and crafts stage… wish I had thought of this years ago!
Your children are adorable! And their art really is “priceless”. So glad to see a prominent designer/blogging hanging her children’s art.
I love the art! It looks amazing with the new west elm shower curtain!
Love it!!!
These are great! Our daughter did a similar project but on a laregr scale HERE .
We stretched this one, but you can find old paintings at garage sales and just use white paint to go over them for the kids to have a fresh slate or rather, a fresh canvas!
Too cute!
A couple of posts back I showed some of my daughters art hanging in our hall “gallery” (just outside the bathroom door). I got her to do 6 seaside pencil sketches and then a wash of pale blue acrylic over them. They look fab in their black frames and I am so proud of her.

I absolutely ADORE hanging kids’ artwork in “their” spaces. Here’s how I do it in our home: http://hillhang-out.blogspot.com/2010/03/home-is-where-your-art-is.html I want to know about the shower curtain as well. Very cute!
I have my kids artwork framed in their room(some are framed with ribbons from art fairs). My 16 year old is a great artist and does wonderful mosaics using magazine pictures as the colors. I have one of his brother playing baseball over his bed and he is currently doing a family beach picture for over our fireplace in the basement. It is amazing!
super cute, the kids and the art!
cute idea! it’s nice that you chose the color palette but they had full reign over the actual art.
I just found your blog. I am a fellow decorator on the coast of NC. I started my business with a craft/antique shop in 2006 but have always been passionate about decorating. Even as a child I would spend hours tweaking the decor in my room. I have recently finished design school and I am sure I will visit your blog often!
I love using my kids art as decor. It’s sentimentel and makes them proud when you display it.
:)
This is the cutest. I love original art work from kids. They’re interpretation of things is so adorable!
Love the art! Our little artists’ work is hanging in the dining room. Other pieces are scattered around the house. I have set up a ‘gallery’ in the playroom. I’ll post pics as soon as I can decide what to do with the feature wall.
