I’ve blogged about our dining room several times but have yet to post a big reveal of any kind. That’s mainly because something just feels off to me. The walls are painted, chairs recovered and curtains hung, but it still doesn’t feel “finished.” So, it’s Plan B, I suppose.
I recovered these dining chairs back in the spring, and although I love the fabric, it’s just not jiving with the rest of the room. I recovered them before I had any other plans for the space–which is exactly why an overall plan before you start is generally a good idea. . . .
After staring at the space and scratching my head for the last several months, I’ve decided to change the chair fabric to something a little darker and more sophisticated. (I’m leaving the fabric on the bench/ottoman as is.) I’ve long loved this fabric and don’t know why I never thought of using it in the dining room before now:

It’s on an ebony background and has just a hint of green in the pattern.
On a side note, I’m sorry to report that Fancy Nancy died in our dining room floor over the weekend.
My other plans for the room include framing more botanicals from this book. More frames for bigger impact, right?
So, hopefully, before the year is done, I’ll have a completed dining room to share with you. Please tell me I’m not the only one who makes over their makeover in progress.
You are not the only one! :-)
I think your new fabric on the chairs is just what you need. Botanicals are my favorite and I can’t wait to see the finished room!

Love the drama the black will add. Plus I’m a sucker for that print… so chic and sophisticated!
I love the two fabrics together! You’re right, changing those chairs is going to pull the room together.
I love this fabric…Canton Bazaar in Walnut! (used it on the lampshade makeover in my master bedroom.) I adore it here mixed with the yellow fabric…beautiful! Now get to work!
:)

Ha! I make over my makeovers every step of the way. In the end, it looks nothing like what I set out to do. I guess that’s the fun?! Love the black chin-toile. xxoo
I’m famous for winging things instead of developing plans in advance. I’ve changed the look of my living room about three times in 2010 alone!
Love the more sophisticated look of the fabric you chose, it will look perfect with the botanical prints.
Oh my gosh! I feel like my whole life is one big makeover of a makeover :) Haha! BTW- we love us some Fancy Nancy over here too :)

One of the few consistent things I do is to change my mind in the middle of a makeover.
I can’t wait to see it all pulled together.
You are not alone– I feel like the majority of my house is in the midst of a makeover that’s been re-started time and time again. Go figure… work in progress, I say!.
PS. My condolences on Fancy Nancy. She’s always been a favorite of mine. :)
Love the fabric and I can’t wait to see the finished room! Loved the comment about Fancy Nancy too, made me smile♥
Girl…you wouldn’t be a designer if you didn’t accept change!!! I do the same thing at my house. Very hard for me to stick to a plan because I am always thinking of a better way…..go for it. I think you are on the right track.
I mess up and/or change my mind all the time! The new fabric is great.
I painted my office 3 times in one weekend! I always change my mind half way through… That’s what makes it fun and challenging I guess!
:)
Oh.. and good choice with the chair fabric. While I like the first fabric, this will add so much more drama!
Can’t wait to see it!! = )
And heck no, you are not the only one!
I love your botanicals! May I suggest some yellow caution tape to mark off Fancy Nancy’s final resting place? Looks like a crime scene to me. ;)
Those ideas sound fabulous! Love the 2 fabrics together!
Great pattern!
Oh….poor Fancy Nancy.
Love the fabric.
Pretty sure every third project I tackle is a makeover of a makeover. Fabric I bought to cover an entry table has now been designated for curtains for the dining room and then curtains for the office (the bolt is still sitting there with not a single stitch in it yet). I think you’re on the right track with the bolder fabric. I have the green/brown colorway of the current chair fabric that will (someday, unless I change my mind) be a windowseat in our living room. It’s all part of the decorator life!

Love the new fabric! it gives that vroom…. Your dining room will look great, once you’re done!
Enjoy the process!
It took me a minute to figure out the Fancy Nancy part…I clearly haven’t been a parent for long enough!
Love the new fabric and the botanical prints!
Emily, I love that you are adding more black and that pattern is a classic, Good move on your part!! My mind is spinning with new ideas for hearth and home this year, just look at my post and you will see what I mean, does your mind spin like mine?? I bet it does because you are always coming up with great new ideas for your home, Happy Monday,Kathysue
My dining room has been made over twice since we moved in. Eighteen months ago.
I love the new fabric, its beautiful! Can’t wait to see a big reveal.
Well, I did like the old new fabric but now that I see the direction you’re going in, the toile will be perfect! Looking forward to the final reveal!
No Emily, you are not the only one.
I’ve spent some serious money in my living room because things I’ve painted, sewed or just plain bought that had to be re-painted, re-sewed & purchased again. But sometimes you don’t know how the room will look or feel until you’ve had an item in place & live with it for awhile.
I feel for ya!
Great post! I received the “stylish blogger award” and you are in my top ten list to pass it on to. Great blog. http://shadestonehome.blogspot.com/2011/01/stylish-blogger-award-for-my-little.html
I’ve done that, too, but I’m sure no matter which direction you decided to go, it would be beautiful. Your taste is impeccable!
Now. What’s on the reality TV lineup for tonight? ;)
I makeover and then makeover my makeovers. I’m planning on recovering my dining room chairs for the third time. I’m pretty sure every room in my house has been(or soon to be) painted twice in the past 5 years.
I have hte same book and was trying to frame the pages but they are an unusual size, where did you get the frames?
You’re definitely not the only one! I seem to hold out for the ‘perfect thing’ only to have changed my mind by the time I have found it. . . and so the design process continues!
@Libby–I use the frames from Michaels. They’re 11 x 14 size and come in a two pack for $7.99.
girl you are so on the right track with that ebony fabric and the botanticals..looks fab together..you are such a color master…have fun!
Ha! Why do you think I never post a project from my house! I am always re-doing them!
I am constantly changing my mind. I like the darker option. I am sure whatever you do will be gorgeous as always.
P.S. I am sorry about Fancy Nancy. It looked like a bad scene.

I am the same way!! Great find on that botanical book!
It’s looking great Emily! I will be watching.

exciting! love the fabric. can’t wait to see.
I definitely like both fabrics, but think your new choice is better for year-round living. The blue+white of the first is a bit more summery. It looks really nice with your bench fabric, too!
I like the old fabric but I love the new one ! Don’t worry, I’m always changing things at my house too.
I do the same thing!!! I love this fabric Emily! And I think it is way more sophisticated than the blue (eventhough I love how you use color)!
I am going to go ahead and purchase that book. The book I have is nowhere near as good as yours. Can’t wait to see more.
Love that fabric…it feels more dining room glamorous for sure!
can’t wait to see the space!
I love the fabric! And how funny about Fancy Nancy! I was obsessed with dolls when I was little, so my mom can relate to this (: I agree- more pictures, bigger impact!
Love the new fabric! I think it is the perfect thing for those chairs. I also laughed so hard that I snorted at the Fancy Nancy comment…it took me by surprise…you are too funny.

I am so sorry to hear that Fancy Nancy croaked! At least she passed in a beautifully decorated room!

I love the new dining room fabric. I need to re-do my dining room chairs in something darker (like this) to hide the food stains from my 7 yr old… :)
Hi! New to your fabulous blog! I just posted about your dining room plans – please let me know if you aren’t ok with that! love, love, love your style!!!
Tessa
I have that same Waverly chinoiserie in my dining room, too (in the chocolate brown). Great fabric at a great pice!
