My Kids’ Bathroom: Starting with Stripes

January 5, 2011

Don’t you love when you find the item that you know is going to give you the push to get a room started (or finished)?  For months (okay, two years), the bathroom shared by my kids has been hanging in limbo.  When I saw this new shower curtain from West Elm, I knew just where it was going.

Stripe Shower Curtain
I think the horizontal stripes are perfect for a (shared) kids’ bathroom.  Fun, without being too juvenile.  So that it feels like “theirs,” I’m planning on bringing in some kid-oriented artwork.
And, I’m taking down the towel bars and using several of these large hooks to hopefully remedy the never-ending heap of towels on the floor.  (Does anyone else have this problem?)

Yes, I have the same problem with my husband. I installed hooks thinking it would make hanging his towel easier for him. (who knew it was so difficult?) But my plan didn’t work. He still can’t seem to do it.
His mama didn’t raise him right!!

I agree… it takes ONE special item to get the ball rolling- and this time of year is awesome because of all the NEW products and furnishings being released! I got 4 of my favorite store catalogs in the mail yesterday- one of them was for West Elm! Woohoo- it’s like Christmas is continuing!

Can’t wait to see where else you go with this smart and young space!

Great shower curtain. I still have my daughter’s artwork framed and hanging in our house and she is almost 25! I think I love it even more now. I gave up on towel bars years ago, have nothing but hooks now – yes it helped.

I put a double towel bar up in the kids bathroom last year thinking that would help. It didn’t. I’m also going to try switching to hooks!

Cute bathroom. I tried the hooks when we first moved in, and then had to take them down, put two long bars back up, and put the hooks back up behind the door for robes. there are still towels all over the floor. something is wrong with my children.

Love the shower curtain. We have the same problem with towels in the kids bathroom. I’ve been thinking for awhile that our towel rods need to come down to be replaced by hooks. I can’t wait to see photos of your finished bathroom.

Great shower curtain. Planning to rip down our towel bar as well. We have a striped curtain as well that I love . . but it has a lot of pink in it. Oh boy. Won’t last long with my little man getting bigger everyday.

Emily love, love the shower curtain. I have always told my clients to use hooks with kids towels. I have had them designate a certain color of hook and towel for each child and also I have had them put an initial above the hook to designate the childs name. One of my clients put a picture of each childs handprint and name in a frame above the hook. So many fun ways to do a childs bathroom. Bathrooms are my favorite rooms to design!!! Kathysue

I just bought a similar Walmart black and white shower curtain for our 40’s era black and yellow tiled bath. If only the yellow at West Elm had been available! Any, I know you’ll love it because those horizontal stripes really do what folks say they will — make the surrounding area look wider.

I love the shower curtain! Of course, I am into all things yellow these days, so I might be biased. I also removed towel bars from our bathroom and added a DIY towel rack with a bunch of hooks; it works perfectly because we have so many visitors in the summer and there is plenty of room for guest towels!

Hi Emily! If I were to choose the right piece of iron hardware for my bathroom, I’d go for towel bars. With hooks, you can’t fold the towel and minimize the length of what’s hanging, and that can be messy.

I’ve had that problem many times, and the last one got me fed up and checking out hand forged iron hardware online right away. But it’s really up to how you view their function. Also, you have to see which one suits the design of your bathroom better.

I know this post is a million years old in blog years, but I have to put in my two cents regarding towel hooks. Does anyone notice that their towels smell moldy more often on hooks than on towel bars?

My husband always hangs his towel on a hook, while I hang mine on a bar. His towel always stinks more than mine, so I blamed the hook. Perhaps I am wrong? Maybe it is because he showers more frequently than I do?
