Last week, I found this beautiful piece (at a local consignment boutique) for a client’s dining room:
It seems like china cabinets are being used less and less these days in modern dining rooms. Could it be a lack of space or less formal entertaining? Either way, I think the china cabinet is still a classic. Their size lends them to making a big statement in the room (which is why I loved the detailing on the doors of the one above).
And, if you think china cabinets are only for traditional dining rooms, here are some great examples of how they can blend with more modern decor:
Love the idea of painting it an unexpected color.

On a completely unrelated side note. . . .I just realized yesterday (after 10+ months of blogging!) that I’ve been replying to many of your comments to my posts and some have been going to “no-reply” email addresses. While I’ve prided myself on trying to respond to each question you leave, it seems you might have thought I’ve been kindly ignoring you. Just thought I would throw that disclaimer out there. My apologies. I’ll try to respond by leaving a comment on the post later in the day if there are questions from here on out. (Or, you can always email me directly.)
Happy holiday weekend!
LOVE that piece you found!! I have one I’m trying to figure out how to add “fretwork” to the glass doors, without looking cheesy. Any ideas? I’ve had the same issue with replying to comments. I wish there was a better way!
Have a great weekend!
It’s gorgeous! I wish I had room for such a cabinet in my dining room/foyer…
You find the most amazing pieces! I inherited a hutch/china cabinet from my grandmother that we plan to use when we move. I know I want to paint it, but I’m leaning away from white or black. I really like the red cabinet against the mocha walls! Thanks!

That piece is gorgeous!! Simply stunning….It reminds me of a piece I once saw in Domino…not sure you have the picture (w/the striped chair), but it’s gorgeous! Oh, and the last picture on your post is from CSN.
Great Find!! I still love the look and storage of a china cabinet. I don’t have room for one at the moment but someday I would like to find one and maybe paint an unexpected color to keep it fresh. I love that red one!
I love a formal dining room. We dont use our china too often but when I do use it I love how it looks on my table and I always say to my husband “we need to use our china more often”
What a lovely piece you found! I like some china cabinets, but the dusting. Oh, the dusting. I still have flashbacks from childhood.
I especially love the bottom photo! It’s the perfect size china cabinet.
I think that most China cabinets are soo bulky, which might be one reason they are used less. I don’t have room for one! (We also don’t have a formal dining room though)
Great find Emily ~~
Happy weekend to you!
xoxo Laura
Great piece! And the email thing…I know! Someone contacted me after I thought I had been responding to inquiries and I then realized it was the non-reply issue. Many do receive the responses, however, I am assuming it is how a reader’s profile is set up? So, without going and looking, how do you know? I am so technically challenged!

Great post! My dining room is a sea of dark wood…table/chairs, piano, tea cart and hutch….it looks like a brown Buick convention. I desperately want to paint some of it, but just don’t know where to start! Holler next time you’re in Texas. ;)
happy long weekend!
xoxo, cassie
I actually like chin cabinets! Especially the one you found! Can’t wait to see it in its new home!
Oh and the comment situation, my phone lets me know if it a no reply commenter. But, I actually hate that, because I either have to find their blog or go to my post and respond… I’m glad I get your responses!
The china cabinet you found is beautiful! I actually really like the color plates in it. Turquoise is my favorite (: It’s so great to find beautiful pieces at a consignment store, makes my day!
Love the piece you found! We have a sideboard in our dining room but I want a bookcase/china cabinet in our living room…. I still love them, especially with a pretty paint/fabric/wallpaper backing to add interest, etc.
Emily, these are beautiful! I could definitely see the first pic in my house!
Ha Ha Emily. That is what I figured out one day….and I felt so rude! Which is why I wrote the interview w/ the “blogger”.
But…I do love that china cabinet. It seems like DR are too small these days, but if they are, I think a china cabinet is still a beautiful addition.
I like the idea of updating the china cabinet with paint rather than getting rid of it because it doesn’t fit with the latest trends. After all, everything is cyclical and china cabinets are great for storage and keeping your dishes dust-free!
Yhis is an amazing china cabinet. They will always be a statement!

I’m with you on china cabinets. I like the height they add to a room. Saw one in Maine this summer (for a song) that I would’ve liked to bring home to Houston!
