A Bright Idea (for Your Powder Room)

September 29, 2010

Yesterday, a friend and I went to the annual home tour (“Homearama”) that’s sponsored by the Charlotte Homebuilders Association.  As opposed to years past, the houses featured this year were more “attainable,” unlike some of the mega-mansions I’ve toured in the past (still big and beautiful, mind you, but not so huge that you can’t find your way out).

I snapped lots of pics of things I loved and ideas to file away that I’ll share with you as soon as I get them off my camera, crop, edit, etc.  In the meantime, I had to share this quick idea with you.  Don’t you just love when you see something you’ve never thought of before?

This was the powder room in one of the homes, and I love the fact that there is no light fixture mounted above the mirror.  Instead they used this beautifully detailed drum pendant, making the powder room more of a “room.”
Beautiful!  Definitely tucking this idea away for future use. . .
If you ever consider doing this, here are some great (and inexpensive) options for swanky powder room lighting that I found on Overstock:
Geometric Hanging Shade
3-Light Contemporty Nickel Chandelier
Metal Leaf Hanging Light
I’ll be sharing the rest of the highlights (according to me) from Charlotte’s “Homearama” with you next week.

Have you ever used one of those conversion kits to turn a can light into a hanging fixture? I’m wondering if they work well, because I’ve been thinking about doing this in my bathroom for a while!! Great finds, Emily, thanks!

I am a HUGE fan of the conversion kits and have used them in many rooms. I once saw a powder bath in Domino that used this technique with lighting in a bathroom and put it in my inspirational files, it is a great way to light a powder bath!! Janell

Thanks, Janell. Sarah–I’ve not personally used them, but if Janell says they’re good, I would trust her :)

I’ve been wanting to do this for so long but I was also wondering about the conversion kits. I’m so excited to know they work because the only light in my powder room is a can light right about the sink/mirror. It doesn’t give much light and dropping something down will help tremendously (plus give it that added personality it so desperately needs). Thanks for posting!!

Its pretty. Did you think there was enough light around the mirror? Maybe its less of an issue in a powder room as opposed to a full bath.

I have been tossing the idea of using a conversion kit around in my head for a couple of weeks now. I am looking to replace the not-so fab light fixture that currently hangs in my hallway. The pendent lighting is just the inspiration I needed to go ahead and give it a try. Thanks Emily :)

That’s such a great idea, we just moved into a new house and I was just thinking how much I hated the over the mirror lighting in our powder room. Perhaps a chandelier will do the trick!! Thanks for the post!

I can’t wait to see the rest of your pictures, too. That lighting just makes all the difference, doesn’t it? I really love it. Now to go the hardware store and learn how to use a conversion kit! Thanks, Emily!

Looking forward to your HomeArama pics! I live in Charlotte and I usually go. I am on the fence b/c I was underwhelmed the last couple of times (or maybe overwhelmed with the HUGE overdone houses??). Thought I might check it out this year especially since the houses are more normal …was it worth it??

So glad I found your blog by the way! I love it! :)

Great idea! And I love that your home tour allowed you to take pics!

The 3-Light Contemporary White Shade Nickel Chandelier is breathtaking. This is definitely the perfect room lighting
fixture I was looking for. My daughter will love this.
