Design by Skype

August 2, 2010

Warning: This post may contain images that are unsuitable for early morning viewing and could leave a scary lasting impression. . . (you’ll see what I mean).

My sister lives 7 hours away, but we’re slowly but surely making progress on her living room.  A couple of weeks ago, we came up the the bright idea to do some “Skype decorating”and I thought you would enjoy the funny process.  It basically consisted of me yelling things like “Move that to the right!  No, no, I mean left!  Now, move it down! Oh no, that doesn’t look right at all. Take it down and let’s try something else!”

Our goal was to make this gallery wall above her piano look better by beefing it up a little, working only with frames she already had.  Here’s how it looked when we started (and that’s my sweet nephew, who also likes to Skype):

Step 1: Take everything down.  I think this is always the best first step when accessorizing, hanging pictures, styling bookcases, etc.  It gives you a clean slate.

And, here’s the start of our Skype session–and the scary part.  Yes, you will see me with no make up and my hair in a towel.  One of the luxuries of working from home, I guess. . . .

We started by hanging her biggest print first.

(Look closely and you will see that I have alot of help on my end, during this process.)
We started from the bottom and worked our way up the wall, paying more attention to the size and orientation of the frames rather than what was actually in them.
Stopped to dry my hair. . . Another luxury of working from home (and working with your sister).
Yeah, she’s going to kill me for some of these. . . (Notice helper #2 is in my lap now.)
Making progress, extending the gallery out beyond the sides of the piano for more impact visually. (Helper #3 is awake from her nap and ready to Skype.)
Added an embroidered “M” centered at the top.  (That’s me, in the corner, pondering. . . .)
And, we’re both happy with the arrangement!  All she has left is to find pictures for the empty frames.
The before (again):
And, the finished wall:
What did we do before Skype?
***On another note, I have a giveaway that you’re going to LOVE coming up on Wednesday!  I’ll let it be a surprise, but trust me, it’s a good one :)

And to think, when I watched the Jetsons as a kid, I didn’t think it would ever really happen! I love that the “M” is in a place of honor. I love me an initial.

Your post totally made my day, thanks!! “Skype decorating” should be added to the dictionary ha ha!! Your sister’s gallery wall really went to crooked and drab to sleek and fab! Great work (on both sides of the web cam)!

    Happy Monday!

This is so funny, but I think you are actually onto something! I help my sister decorate her place all the time through emails, texting pictures, etc. but I never thought to use Skype! Genius :)
