Console of the Week

July 20, 2010

This will be the fourth attempt since we’ve moved in to find the right piece to sit our beloved television on.  I think this one’s a keeper. . . You remember last week’s try:–the Goodwill console that I loved but was way too small:

Meet it’s replacement:
As you can see, this area is no where near finished (can you see my paint swatch on the wall?), but I thought I would keep you up to date in my on-going console saga anyway. . . I liked the detailing on the doors–plus, it was already painted white and only $85.
Now, onto the next dilemma: what to do on the wall behind the tv?  I don’t know about you, but flat screens and hanging art around them always stumps me a little. . . .

I haven’t quite decided on whether I’m going to center the tv, but I would definitely like to do some type of gallery wall, something like one of these:

HGTV
Has anyone done a great gallery around their television? Pictures, please!

Those are both great Emily. We have been looking for a console too. I can’t wait to see your wall when you finish it.

I have done something similar, but using ledges above the tv and console, did help divert attention away fro the tv. I adore this examples!! I laughed at the line “beloved tv…”, glad it’s finally found something to rest on! Janell

Oh I love your new piece! I loved the other one too! Don’t you love it when a vintage piece is updated and you can keep the original hardware?!

Anywho, I never thought about a gallery wall around a flat screen! I thinks its cool and now I’m going to save it for inspiration! If I come across more pics, I’ll send them your way:-)

I like the second one better than the first and I like the idea of floating shelves around a TV. it almost gives the impression of a built in media console and then you get to have all your entertainment right there – books etc.

I love the new console! I think an art wall around the TV would look fantastic-the inspiration photos are amazing. I like the TV off center and then photos, art and maybe mirrors around it would make it part of the art. You coud mount it on the wall as well.
I haven’t done anything like that, ours fits into a shelving system from Ikea, ours is the same as The Lettered Cottage (I think?)

good luck, can’t wait to see what you come up with!

My tv wall looks kind of similar. I did a floating white shelf above the tv (our ginormous tv also sits above a white thrift store credenza). I also considered a gallery wall but didn’t have enough prints of the right size.

I like the replacement better too. Not as symmetrical, but still symmetrical. LOL You know what I mean?

Your console looks great, Emily! I love it. I haven’t done a gallery around a t.v., but I would like to try it. Out of the two pictures you posted, the second one is my favorite!! BTW, I like the console next to the color swatch. It’s going to look so pretty!

Love the new console! I did more of a symmetrical arrangement around our TV, but I like the gallery walls you posted that help the TV blend in.

You can see the pictures of our TV/wall arrangement on my blog here: http://name5things.blogspot.com/2010/05/bedroom-update-gallery-wall.html.

I really love the new armoire – and for $85!! Wow! I have had your same dilemna and still have nothing on the walls behind my TV but rather used really tall vases on each end of the console. I’m on the search too!

Emily, I definitely like the second pic the best. The other is too equivalent in my opinion. Glad you finally found what you were looking for. ;)

It’s beautiful Emily! Definitely the right choice. I also had quite the time finding the right console as my tv was so large. I’ll email you a photo of how I placed my art around it.

Great find! and painted already! We have our tv hanging with one picture on either side. If I had more wall space I would do a gallery…We have a vent near the ceiling that would make it too weird. Can’t wait to see what you do.

Love the new console. It looks like the perfect size. I think doing a gallery wall would be great. To throw a little balance in the mix, maybe you could add some dimension using those extender things from Pottery Barn. Here’s a link.

I’m so glad you said that piece was already painted white! I can’t imagine going through refinishing all over again, but hey – you’re the expert at that! :) We have the same dilemma with our TV. After trying different things, I now have three large framed pieces of hand-printed wrapping paper above the TV. It’s a geometric print that picks up all the other colors in the room. Not sure if it’ll last, but it’s my best solution so far!

I love the idea of a gallery wall around the TV. Thanks! I have a wonderful gallery of family photos on another wall in the living room, what if I moved them around the TV? I will find out this fall when I’m finally spending some time indoors. Do tell, have you sold the other one yet?

(BTW the chair fabric is on it’s way, I can’t wait to see it all done!)

ooo, I love this one even better!!! Did you sell your other one? I think it would have been too big for my sister’s apartment after seeing her place in person. We passed Belmont on the way to Mary Jo’s the other day and I thought of you and was wondering how your TV console saga was going. Glad to see you have a winner finally! I love the idea of a gallery wall… We just have bookshleves on either side of our console but if we didn’t then I would have done a gallery! Good luck, can’t wait to see the end result!

Perfect replacement to the smaller one. I love the idea of incorporating the tv into a wall arrangement. It takes the focus off the tv.
